Setso from the Young Designers Collection 2026.
The Setso blanket design is a celebration of Basotho heritage, identity, and way of life, expressed through a rich combination of meaningful symbols. At the heart of the design is a triangular shape representing a house, inspired by the iconic Qiloane Mountain fortress associated with King Moshoeshoe I.
This central motif reflects the resilience, strength, and unity of the Basotho people. Surrounding the house are maize corns, symbolizing the staple food that sustains daily life and represents nourishment, growth, and a deep connection to the land.On either side of the blanket are knobkerries, or koto, traditional tools that held great importance in Basotho society. They were used not only in daily activities but also for protection, symbolizing survival, defense, and preparedness in the face of challenges. At the top and bottom of the design are buckets known as lerit’soana, essential vessels used to carry and store water, milk, and traditional Basotho beer (moqombothi), representing sustenance, community, and cultural practices. Encasing the entire design are litema patterns—intricate decorative motifs traditionally used to adorn Basotho homes.
These patterns are a powerful expression of cultural identity, artistry, and continuity, linking past and present generations. Altogether, the Setso blanket is more than just a garment; it is a visual narrative that weaves together the history, values, and everyday life of the Basotho people, standing as a timeless symbol of heritage, pride, and cultural expression.
